Portsmouth have overtaken Blackburn Rovers in the race to sign Liverpool left‑back Luke Chambers. The 22‑year‑old, who has spent the second half of the 2025‑26 season on loan at Charlton Athletic, is expected to move to the south coast club if the deal is completed before the summer 2026 transfer window closes.
The transfer news comes after journalist Alan Nixon posted on Patreon that Portsmouth are "pushing ahead in the chase" for Chambers. Liverpool have been told that a decision will shortly be made over where the player will head next, but Portsmouth appear to have the upper hand.
Chambers has trained with the Liverpool first‑team squad but has yet to receive a shirt number for the 2026‑27 season, a sign that the club is ready to let him go. He joined Liverpool’s academy at the age of six and has been capped at England U15, U16, U18, U19 and U20 levels.
His senior experience has come mainly through loan spells. He spent the second half of 2022‑23 with Kilmarnock in Scotland, then two half‑seasons on loan at Wigan Athletic in League One. In January 2026 he moved to Charlton Athletic, where he made 18 appearances in the Championship.
Queens Park Rangers were linked with the player earlier in the summer, but their interest has since cooled. Blackburn Rovers had been confident of securing Chambers, but the new reports suggest Portsmouth may win the tug‑of‑war.
If Portsmouth succeed, Chambers will bring Championship experience and a Premier League pedigree to Fratton Park. He has been praised by Liverpool’s Kostas Tsmikas, who described him as "a very, very good player and always very focused in the training".
The transfer window remains open for more than a week, giving clubs time to finalise deals. Portsmouth’s move to secure Chambers could strengthen their defence ahead of a campaign that will see them compete for promotion to the Premier League.
